5 Tips For A Better Down Swing
If you want to improve your downswing then we have the tips that can help you do this whether you are a beginner just starting out or you are a golfer with years of experience. There are many tips out there to help with your backswing, stance, distance, takeaway, and other topics but few address ways to improve your downswing.
#1. The Movement is Natural
As soon as you start your downward return from the top of the back swing, the power and force needed to send the ball some distance and get the club head speed that you need are already available in your body. It is simply a matter of practicing to perfect your technique and channel this power correctly.
#2. Be Smooth…But Square
You want a transition from your backswing peak to your downswing that is smooth, without any jerky motions or hesitation. A common reaction by a number of golfers is to either let their hands take over or jerk the club at the maximum height of their backswing. Allowing your hands to start the downswing process will usually cause you to slice or hook severely because the club head and your body are no longer in sync. If you have this reaction then you can fix the problem by taking a very short pause at the top of the back swing before you start your downswing. The motion should start with your hips and then your arms, followed by your hands then your shoulders, and lastly your body. You will get better distance and more control when your transition is smooth.
#3.
Never start the downswing with you hands, and always make sure that your hands are ahead of the head of the club as you make contact with the ball. This allows the energy which has built up to transfer during the impact, and that energy is not effectively transferred if you let your hands get behind the head of the club when you hit the ball.
#4.
Always make sure that the club head is forward of the ball, but is actually behind it. This will give you the maximum leverage and the most power possible. If the head of the club is not behind the ball your shot will be a bad one because the club head will not follow the targeted path.
#5.
It is important that the head of the club picks up speed and accelerates properly as you uncoil your body during the shot. Start accelerating as soon as you begin the downswing, and continue the club head acceleration all the way through your strike zone until after you have hit the ball so that you get a smooth follow through that is complete.
Your downswing is critical to your game and is essential to your swing. Practice will help you achieve a downswing that is smooth and effective, and give you the power and distance that you are looking for. Get out on the course, whether it is Providence Country Club in Charlotte or another course, and practice until you have the game you want.
